Inheriting the skills and essence of Edo

By dyeing winning designs on winning fabrics using winning techniques, we faithfully carry out these three "wins," strictly disciplining ourselves and delivering high quality products. We named our company Sankatsu Co., Ltd. based on this founding principle.
Today, more than a hundred years since its founding, the social environment has changed. There are only a few factories and artisans left in the world of nagaita chugata dyeing, chusen dyeing, and indigo dyeing. However, the mainstay of our business is to pass on the yukata dyeing techniques that our predecessors have developed and refined, and to contribute to society at large through the planning and development of new lifestyles and fashions.

The "Living National Treasure," Kotaro Shimizu, and the "Living Guide of Yukata," Keizaburo Shimizu

In this age of chemical dyes and new dyeing techniques, including chusen, making kimonos in a rational way has become the mainstream. However, we do not compromise. Instead, we stick to the nagaita chugata, a dyeing technique from the Edo Period, where all the processes are made by hand. We cling to the belief that "various techniques are not accomplished in a day, but are the blessings of the ancestors."
We also continue to refine our skilled techniques, focusing our wisdom on design, pursuing the best materials and comfort, as well as working with the artisans that has earned us the reputation, "If it's nagaita chugata, it's Sankatsu."
In 1955, Kotaro Shimizu's excellent dyeing technique for nagaita chugata was widely recognized on a global scale as an important intangible cultural property. Considered a living national treasure, people were amazed by his skills, finding it hard to believe that it was actually made by human hands.
Although Kotaro Shimizu passed away in 1968, the art of making yukata with a focus on dyeing and fabrics has been passed on to his third son, Keizaburo
Shimizu, who is the "Living Guide of Yukata" and director of the Sankatsu Yukata Museum.
